Maldives Unveils National Air Traffic Service Pvt Ltd
In a strategic move to bolster air traffic control services across the nation, the Maldivian government has introduced a dedicated entity, known as the Maldives National Air Traffic Service Pvt Ltd. This newly established company will assume responsibility for overseeing all aspects of air traffic services within the Maldives, including air traffic control, air navigation services, and communication, navigation, and surveillance/air traffic management (CNS/ATM) systems.
Previously, air traffic operations in the Maldives were managed by the Air Traffic Management Unit, Air Traffic Control Center, and Control Tower of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). However, with the inception of the Maldives National Air Traffic Service Pvt Ltd, the entirety of air traffic services will now be transferred to this dedicated organization.
The pivotal role of managing director for this newly-formed entity has been entrusted to the experienced air traffic controller, Mohammed Athuhar.
A government spokesperson emphasized that the Maldivian airspace has witnessed an unprecedented surge in air traffic due to the expansion of airports and seaplane operations. This surge has resulted in a notable increase in simultaneous flights within Maldivian airspace, reaching between 60 to 70 movements.
The spokesperson further articulated that the establishment of a separate company specifically for air traffic control was deemed essential to ensure the provision of these services while upholding the highest standards of safety and security, in line with the principles outlined in the Chicago Convention.
The establishment of the Maldives National Air Traffic Service Pvt Ltd marks a significant and positive development for the Maldivian aviation industry. It is expected to play a pivotal role in guaranteeing that air traffic services within the Maldives continue to meet the highest quality standards and uphold safety and security as paramount priorities at all times.
